One more trip to the mökki and I understood even deeper, why Finns love it so much.

A short video from our trip. Enjoy 😉

The first time I actually went to a mökki (Finnish summer cottage) was with my local parents in autumn. By that time, I already experienced how amazing this place is: A wooden estate located in the rural area, where all you can see are nature, nature, and nature.

This second time, we went to my friend’s mökki in April – the changing period between Spring and Summer. After the hardcore-exam-season, we deserved a hide-away weekend in the wilderness, far away from Lappeenranta.

Snow has completely melted in Lappeenranta city. But not here

Each mökki has its own history – another reason why they are so special in different ways. For this one, it was built manually by my friend’s father and his fellows in the 80s.

Though being built nearly 40 years ago, the mökki is still in perfect condition; even the woods used to make the place are still metabolizing.
From outside, the house looks quite small. But the designers had made sure that there would be enough room for up to 10 people. In the picture is Keys and the cozy attic
Fireplace is the key to survive in this particular Finnish weather

One of the things I love about this mökki is its old-fashioned vibe:

  • Radio instead of TV or computer
  • Woods for fireplace instead of electric heater
  • Wooden sauna 😉
  • Board games, ukulele, and story-telling, rather than Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram. A real hide-away from the modern world.

And, have I mentioned how much we have been eating in that 3-day-2-night trip?

Here, we don’t count the day by morning-afternoon-evening, but by breakfast-lunch-dinner 😀
This is how Finns go picnic in the Spring – grilling sausages by the frozen lake and tell horror stories

And last but not least, never forget to go sauna guys 😉

Sauna everyday feels great, although it can make you go loco @@

And technically that was it: a perfect weekend in the countryside, with good food, good friends, having good time. Sometimes in life, that’s all we need to come back stronger.

This blog is dedicated to the mökki’s owner, Kristiina and Lauri; to my new-born, Keys, and to the great time we spent together this spring 2019.
