Besides school, where else can you actually meet up with friends?

Well, ever since I moved to another country, one of my biggest dreams is to organize an event where my friends, regardless of their backgrounds, can all come together on a special night. Friends that I know from class, from gym, restaurants, other parties…will be able to get to know each other, thus making our university life more cozy and meaningful.

But what, and when should it be?

Regarding of “what”, things went like this:

I don’t like club parties, or those where boozing is the biggest goal. So no.

Sport or indoor party requires my friends to either have some kind of interest, or entrance fee. So no as well.

BBQ outdoor is the best idea: affordable, close to school, easy to find. And because summer is coming, so you can also enjoy the sunny atmosphere it offers.

“When” can be quite tough. The biggest difficulty lies on the differences between friends’ schedules. Some may go back to their home countries, some go on holiday, some have exams…so for this one, it’s very sorry for those who can not make it, but there’s not much I can arrange.

And there it came. We went early to keep the BBQ place; that day was a perfect day for BBQ, so many people are looking for a place as well.

From 5pm, friends started to arrive. The rest was history:

A “bad ass” moment of Ben and Mikko. They came earliest to help with the set-up
The day was sunny and cool – perfect time for grilling sausages outside
There were countless happy moments, when good friends met each other, new friends initiated new friendships, and many activities happening

It was after this event when I realized the truth of being international: in other to be a real nomad, these are what you need to obtain:

  • Curiosity, which motivates you to learn more from the people around you. The more you know, the easier it will be to get your goals.
  • Confidence, to initiate a great friendship.
  • YOLO spirit: If you want to do something, just do it. Hesitation kills more than  you could ever imagine.
Don’t worry, be happy 😉

And last but not least, for me, the best moments during this event, are when I stay at a corner, and seeing my friends enjoying the whole thing, by the fireplace. “Make your customers happy and you’ll be happy” seems to be true in this case.
