If you ever feel like wanting to eat Chinese food in Saigon, try Thuong Hai’s Chinese roasted duck with noodles soup – one of the most significant Chinese dishes in Vietnam. A small bowl of soup packs with lots of healthy herbal ingredients that will blow your mind away.

This eatery is located in a small alley on Nguyen Tri Phuong Street; however, the number of customers came to eat at this place is surprisingly large. When we first came here, there was almost no place to sit.

In the menu, they have the same noodles soup with different parts of the duck: wing, thigh, neck, parson’s nose which costs 45.000 VND, 52.000 VND, 33.000 VND, 33.000 VND, respectively. Furthermore, their special dish is called 1/4 roasted duck thigh with noodles soup costing 62.000 VND. The prices are quite expensive compared to other Vietnamese street food but it is worthed since it took time, dedication, and experience to cook this dish.
Originally from China, this dish was brought to Vietnam by Chinese immigrants. Nowadays, the recipe has been changed to suit the Vietnamese taste. Although most of the recipes have been tweaked, they still have some fundamental ingredients such as duck meat, bok choy, chive, egg noodles. About the broth, they usually taste the same. However, only the best places will know how to make it stand out from the traditional broth with their secret ingredients.

The first thing we noticed is the BIG thigh of the duck. The meat was fully marinated with lots of spices and then fried to golden brown. The smell of it was significant. It could be recognized when you first entered the alley. From the crispy skin to the juicy meat, had been marinated fully. Every single bite the meat was packed with flavorful spices that would amaze you.

The egg noodles, bok choy, and chives complemented the duck meat. The broth extremely aromatic with numerous Chinese herbs which had been braised thoroughly.

At the end of the day, the star of this dish was the duck meat. It would make you want to eat more and leave you with a positive impression.
I would give this dish a 3.75/5 because I felt the broth was somehow similar to other places. Overall, all was good. I would return to this place if I feel like craving for a hot bowl of roasted duck with noodles soup.
